SEO for painters: the estimate is the product, and most sites hide it

Nobody searches for a painter out of curiosity. They have a room, a house or an office that needs doing, and they want to know roughly what it costs and whether you will turn up. A painter's site that answers those two things beats one with a nicer gallery.

Who holds the results

Every one of the ten places on this query belongs to a company selling to painters: marketing agencies, a couple of agencies that work only with painters, and software for estimates and invoices. There is no painting contractor in the top.

As in every trade we have measured, the national phrase is a conversation between vendors and contractors. Homeowners search a town and a job, and that list of competitors is much shorter.

What the site has to carry

Interior, exterior and commercial as separate pages. They are different jobs, priced differently, bought by different people, and each is its own search.

A price range per job type, even a wide one: per room, per square foot, per exterior by storeys. The customer is deciding whether to ask for an estimate at all, and a range is what gets them to ask.

What the price includes: prep, repairs, number of coats, the paint brand, cleanup. Two estimates that differ by a third usually differ in exactly this, and the painter who writes it down looks like the honest one.

Before and after photos of real jobs with the town named. Stock photos of a roller on a wall are what every painter site already has.

Licence, insurance and warranty on one page, stated plainly.

Where the enquiries actually come from

A painter lives on a small area. A page for each town you really work in, with jobs done there, will do more than anything aimed at the whole country, and it is work you can check in a month.

Our published prices: $800 to $2,500 for a one page site, from $3,000 for a business site, $250 / month for ongoing search work, one month at a time.
