Is web design still in demand in 2026?

Yes, and the numbers are not close. In our own measurement of this market there are 4,552 distinct queries with real search volume behind them, adding up to 888,900 searches a month, and a single click on the commercial ones costs up to $44.66 in paid results. What has changed is not the demand but where the deciding happens, and for a few kinds of business a website is honestly no longer the first thing to build.

What the demand actually looks like

On 6 September 2026 we pulled the search data for this market ourselves. After collapsing word-order duplicates, 4,552 queries were left with measurable volume, together 888,900 searches a month. Of those, 943 queries have at least 100 searches a month on their own.

People are still typing "website design company near me" and "web design company" in numbers that have not fallen. If the work were disappearing, the paid click price would be the first thing to drop, and it sits between $28.61 and $44.66 on the commercial queries.

What changed is where people decide

The deciding has moved off studio websites. On the 16 commercial queries we checked, the top of the page is held by Reddit and YouTube (7 of 16 each), then the directories: Clutch on 6, DesignRush on 5, Fiverr on 4. Only one of the top five domains was an actual studio.

On 7 of those 16 queries Google also shows a map block, which means part of the choice happens inside business profiles rather than on anybody's website at all.

So the honest shape of it: demand for the work is intact, but a site alone no longer collects that demand the way it did. The site is what closes the decision after someone finds you somewhere else.

When a website is not what you need first

If you are a one-person local trade and your customers find you in the map block, the first money is better spent on that profile and on reviews than on a new site. We would rather say that here than sell you a build you do not need yet.

A site earns its place when you have something to say that a profile cannot hold: prices, a catalog, a real case, a service explained properly, a way to be quoted by an AI answer.
