Can AI build your website?
Yes. Ask a modern AI tool for a landing page and you will have a working one in minutes, and for a simple site that is genuinely enough. What it does not do is answer for what happens after: whether the page still loads fast on a phone, whether its structure matches what people in your market actually search for, and who fixes it when something breaks. Below is the part of that difference we can measure rather than assert.
What AI is genuinely good at here
Producing a first version fast. A layout, a structure to argue with, a draft of the copy, the boring markup underneath. We use these tools ourselves for exactly that, and pretending otherwise would be silly.
If you need one page, you will maintain it yourself, and nobody has to answer for how it performs, an AI builder is a reasonable way to get a site. That is a real option and we are not going to talk you out of it.
Where the measurable difference shows up
The part nobody sees in a preview is speed on a real phone. Our own home page scores 99 out of 100 on Google's PageSpeed Insights with main content at 1.58 seconds, measured as the median of five runs on 9 September 2026.
For comparison we ran the same test on the sites currently ranking for web design in 10 US cities, 31 sites in all. Their median score is 62 out of 100, 28 of the 31 take longer than Google's 2.5 second threshold to show their main content, and the slowest takes 35.4 seconds.
One thing we have to be straight about: we did not check what built those sites. Some are hand-coded, some are themes, some may well be AI-assembled. So this is not proof that AI builds slow sites. It is proof that most sites in this market are slow, whoever made them, because nobody measured after launch. That measuring is the job, and it is the part a generator does not do for you.
If you want AI answers to quote your site
A related worry we hear is the opposite one: not "can AI build it" but "will AI ever mention it". On 6 September 2026 we checked 16 money queries in this market: an AI answer appeared on 9 of them, and what it quoted was YouTube, Reddit and Semrush, with studio and agency sites almost absent.
Getting quoted comes from structure a machine can lift: a direct answer near the top, headings written the way people ask, and numbers with a source next to them. That is a way of writing pages, not a feature a builder can switch on.
So what are you actually paying a studio for
Three things that no generator does today. Deciding what the site should contain, based on what people in your market search for rather than what the tool suggests. Holding the result to a number after launch, which means measuring speed and fixing it when it slips. And being reachable when something breaks a year later.
If those three do not matter for what you are building, the honest advice is to use the tool and keep your money.
